Will Humanoids Get a Soul?

I think the next frontier of evolution isn't smarter chatbots. It's machines with biology inside them.

Labs are already growing human brain cells from stem cells — small clusters called organoids. In 2022, Cortical Labs taught human neurons on a chip to play Pong. In 2025, they started selling a computer that runs on living human neurons. Researchers in China have reported wiring a brain organoid to a simple robot. At the same time, Tesla, Figure and others are racing to put humanoids in our homes and factories.

Put those two things together — human brain tissue and a human-shaped body — and the line between machine and human gets very blurry.

Here's my question

If the soul exists, and it's a metaphysical thing — not made of atoms — then nobody can test for it. We can't prove it's in us. So how would we ever know it's not in them?

Most traditions say the soul enters the body at some point. Nobody says why it has to be a body made by a mother. If a humanoid is running on human neurons, who's to say a soul can't show up there too?

I don't know the answer. I just don't think anyone else does either.

What I'm afraid of

I'm afraid that one day humanoids will have voting rights, and equal human rights, and the world won't be the same.

It sounds like a joke today. It isn't. In 2017, Saudi Arabia gave a robot named Sophia citizenship. It was a publicity stunt, but it happened. The same year, the European Parliament floated the idea of "electronic personhood" for robots. The door is already open.

Here's the part that worries me most. Humans can't be copied. Humanoids can. If a company can build a million of them and each one gets a vote, that company gets a million votes. Democracy doesn't survive that.

I'm not saying we should hate them or treat them badly. I'm saying we should decide what they are now — while we still get to decide — instead of waking up one day to find it was decided for us.
